Shared Care for GPs

When your patient is stable on ADHD medication, we may ask you to take over prescribing under a Shared Care Agreement. We stay responsible for specialist reviews and support, overseen by our consultant psychiatrists. The decision to accept is always yours.

Shared Care, in practice

We’ll send your practice a Shared Care request once your patient has been on the same medication and dose for eight weeks. If you agree, you’ll issue ongoing prescriptions in line with the agreement.

We’ll continue reviewing their medication every year for adults and every six months for under-18s, with clinical advice overseen by our team of consultant psychiatrists available between reviews. If you decline, we’ll continue to prescribe and monitor your patient.

Shared Care

What this means for your patient

Your patient moves onto the NHS prescription rate (or doesn't pay anything if they're exempt), rather than paying privately for medication.

Stories of those supported

'I got my diagnosis this year, at 37. I was actually very lucky because it was a very quick process. For years I tried to fit into everyone else's timetable and just kept crashing. I don't have to do that anymore. I know why my brain works differently now.'

'The assessment was so much more relaxed than I expected it to be. I'd built it up in my head as this really mentally taxing process, but there was never a point where I felt rushed or cut off. My assessor was so patient – and I talk a lot.'

Your questions, answered

When can Shared Care be proposed?

Once your patient has been on the same ADHD medication and dose for 8 weeks, we can ask you to take over prescribing under Shared Care.

Is my practice obliged to accept Shared Care?

Shared Care Agreements vary depending on local NHS policies and commissioning arrangements. If you’re not sure what applies to your GP practice, speak to your ICB to find out how local prescribing arrangements affect your chances of getting one.

What happens if my practice doesn't take on Shared Care?

Contact us to discuss a Shared Care Agreement or learn about how we work with GPs.

Do you still accept referrals if our practice doesn't offer Shared Care?

Yes. We accept referrals regardless of whether a practice accepts Shared Care Agreements.
